Flood warnings issued along the River Severn
Flood warnings were issued this week (11 January) along the River Severn by the Environment Agency with the guidance that ‘flooding is possible’ and for residents in the area to ‘be prepared’.
Council teams are liaising directly with properties affected and will continue to do so throughout the weekend, and carefully monitor the situation along with the Environment Agency.
Despite the Wharfage being closed to vehicles, businesses and visitor attractions like Enginuity and other museums remain open along with the cafés and shops along the Wharfage which can be reached on foot.
Councillor Shaun Davies said: “We wrote to the Government in February 2022 jointly with Shropshire Council to ask for a River Severn conference that recognises the regular cycle of misery, flooding brings and ensure that long-term investment to prevent this is available.
“We want to end the sticking plaster approach, we need investment to end the disruption that takes place here each and every year and we get the investment we deserve as a community.
Latest update: Flood barriers removed (Tuesday 17 January, 18:30pm)
Flood barriers on the Wharfage at Ironbridge have been taken down today and roads around the area (with the exception of Ferry Road) are open. The Environment Agency have removed the flood warning for the area and a flood alert remains in place for the River Severn in Shropshire.
As always, a huge thank you to everyone who has supported our flood response. You are all brilliant.
We’re keeping in touch with a small number of residents who have experienced flooding in their properties as the clean-up continues.
