6 Top Telford Walks this Christmas

If you’re planning on heading out for a walk this Christmas to burn off some of those roast potato and chocolate calories, we’ve got some top tips for brilliant places to explore in Telford and Wrekin.

6 Top Telford Walks this Christmas

1. The Silkin Way - our flagship walking route

This wonderful 14-mile walking and cycling path cuts through our borough from north to south and passes all sorts of fascinating sites of historical interest and natural beauty. It’s a smooth path so great for accessibility if you’re in a wheelchair or pushing a buggy. The trickiest part is deciding which section to explore!

2. Telford Town Park - discover the hidden bits

Everyone knows our wonderful ‘green flag’ Town Park, but did you know it extends far beyond the play areas, formal gardens and big green event space? Telford Town Park is also home to a 230 acre Local Nature Reserve where broadleaved woodland, heathland and pools where stunning orchids, great crested newts, bats and reptiles, butterflies, dragon flies, green woodpeckers, badgers and foxes all live. Just follow the Nature Trail signs.

3. Apley Woods - great for short, accessible walks

If you’ve never visited, we highly recommend a walk in Apley Woods. One of our 23 Local Nature Reserves, this site is wonderfully maintained with help from Friends of Apley Wood volunteers. Choose from a 40-minute pool walk or a 20-minute accessibility walk with no steps and ease of access.

4. Granville Country Park - a more challenging walk with rich rewards

Perfect if you’re looking for a more stretching walk, Granville Park’s 7.5-mile heritage trail is a super way to learn about our borough’s industrial history while surrounded by nature. The waymarked route is steep in parts (with and without steps) and utilises beaten paths through green spaces which may be wet and slippery.

5. The Ercall & St Lawrence’s Hill - because the Wrekin will be heaving!

If you fancy a hill walk that’s a little quieter than the Wrekin, then head to its equally beautiful neighbour – the Ercall. This Local Nature Reserve site offers ancient oak woodland, spectacular views and more than 500 million years of history to be enjoyed here in 66 hectares of space. Woodland birds abound – how many species can you spot?

6. Dale End Park - a spectacular setting and lots to do nearby

Our newest park to receive a ‘green flag’ for excellence, Dale End Park is a wonderful spot in the south of the borough for a bit of fresh air. Why not start with a coffee in Ironbridge then enjoy leisurely stroll along the Wharfage to Dale End. Take a frisbee or a ball for some fun on the park’s large playing field or simply take in the spectacular scenery from one of the many picnic benches – you might even spot a buzzard soaring overhead.
