Award-winning council highlights exciting vacancies at jobs fair
Residents from across the borough dropped into a Telford & Wrekin Council jobs fair to explore a range of exciting vacancies.
Up to 70 people attended the event at Southwater One which was open to jobseekers or anyone looking for a change of direction.
Cleaning, catering and caretaking vacancies were the main areas of focus and staff from those council teams interviewed for roles on the day.
The event, on 30 November, also highlighted the council as a great place to work and informed people about the many benefits that working for the local authority brings.
Telford & Wrekin Council was recognised as Local Authority of the Year this year in the MJ Achievement Awards – the Oscars of Local Government.
Council employees can benefit from a fantastic pension scheme, paid annual leave, flexible working to fit in with family commitments, sick pay (based on length of service) and an employee discount scheme which offers a series of cost savings during these challenging times.
Hannah Jones, of Telford, attended the event to find out more about some of the catering roles on offer.
Hannah said: “I already work in hospitality but I’d like to work in a school catering setting if possible.
“This event was a good opportunity to find out more about some of the catering roles within schools which are on the doorstep and I’m grateful for the advice and support I’ve received.”
Mei Zhang, of Telford, signed up for a short Learn Telford Food Safety in Catering Level 2 course at the jobs fair and wants to secure employment in catering.
Mei said: “I would really like to work in a school catering team so this event was very useful and gave me the chance to see what is available.”
As well as a variety of full-time and part-time roles, the council also employs apprentices across its services.
Apprenticeships offer young people a positive step on the career ladder and the chance to do a job while gaining nationally recognised qualifications.
Telford & Wrekin Council serves a population of 170,000 people and continues to invest in growth and attract new businesses to the borough.
The council is constantly looking to improve and develop its services and wants to recruit enthusiastic individuals who are determined to succeed and want to help the council maintain its high standards.
Some of the current council catering vacancies include catering supervisor and catering assistant posts in the school meals team at primary schools across the borough.
Lorna Hicks, Group Catering Manager for Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “Working within the school meals team is not only rewarding by serving nutritious and healthy meals to our future generations but also supports the education of healthy eating within schools.
“For the right person there is an opportunity to grow within the team and further their career.”
