Telford & Wrekin Council is making significant progress to secure the long term future of Dawley Post Office and the provision of a food retailer, after the Co-op announced the closure of its store in the High Street.

The council is working with Great Dawley Town Council and has settled on a location in the town which can house the post office temporarily.

An existing Dawley business has also applied to accommodate the post office permanently, which the council is supporting.

A temporary post office will be open for certain hours on certain days but the council is working to ensure a permanent solution so the post office can continue to operate at full opening hours.

The post office has been based within the Co-op on Dawley High Street but the Co-op has chosen not to renew its lease which expires in August.

Advanced talks are also underway with a like-for-like national food retailer about the current Co-op on Dawley High Street.

A Telford & Wrekin Council spokesperson said: “We remain committed to protecting the future of Dawley Post Office which provides a valuable service to Dawley residents and is an important, active member of the high street.

“We will support the business owner who has submitted an application for the Post Office to get the post office up and running.

“We are also working closely with Dawley Town Council to find a temporary solution so the post office can continue to operate on a limited basis in the meantime.

“A number of food retailers have shown an interest in the premises and we’re in advanced talks with a national retailer to become the main food shop in the high street. It's important that the offer is the right one for local residents and other businesses.

“We will also continue to work with existing businesses in the town to support and promote them and attract new businesses.”

Telford & Wrekin Council has recently supported a number of businesses in Dawley through its Pride in Our High Street programme, which provides funding to help businesses launch on the high street in empty retail units and on market stalls.

The programme has given two businesses, N’Chanted and Graze & Glory, over £4,500 between them in start-up trial grants to help them launch on Dawley Market.

Jolly Good Egg company has also received a £434 digital grant which has helped to buy a high resolution wall monitor to display its expanding range of products and to support a new click and collect service.
