School sessions help young people to prepare for world of work

Telford & Wrekin Council’s Life Ready Work Ready team is hosting a series of school activity sessions this summer to help young people gear up for the workplace.

School sessions help young people to prepare for world of work

The team, which is part of the council’s Education & Skills service, has organised ‘Guess My Job’ events, a ‘World of Work’ activity and speed networking sessions at primary and high schools across the borough in July before the academic year draws to a close.

These activities are all funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) to improve education and training programmes and bring the world of work and education closer together.

The Guess My Job events for Year 6 and 7 pupils are taking place at Lilleshall Primary School on Friday 1 July (1pm-2.30pm), Telford Park School on Thursday 14 July (8.45am-10.15am) and High Ercall Primary School on Friday 15 July (1pm-2.30pm).

Employees from 10 local businesses are being asked to support the events which give school pupils the opportunity to ask employees about their job (yes or no answers only) before being given five minutes to guess their correct profession.

The employees will then describe their career journey, route into their current role and their training and qualifications before answering further questions from pupils.

On Friday 15 July, students at Telford Park School will be able to speak to employees from up to 15 local businesses at a ‘World of Work’ event (8.45am-10.15am).

They will be able to ask questions and receive guidance and support about the types of jobs that might be available to them in the future.

The Life Ready Work Ready team is also working with Idsall School,Shifnal to deliver separate events over two consecutive days.

The first session on Monday 18 July (9am-11.30am) is a ‘What’s my line?’ event where learners question business volunteers to try and find out their job.

On Tuesday 19 July a speed networking event will give year 8 pupils at the school the chance to question a range of business volunteers about the skills needed to do their job over a short time period.

The Life Ready Work Ready team is also supporting a careers fair at Meole Brace School, Shrewsbury on Monday 11 July (2pm-6pm).

Members of the team will have a strong presence and display stand at the event – offering young people a wide variety of advice and guidance on a range of careers.

Councillor Eileen Callear (Lab), Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Visitor Economy, Employment and Skills said: “Preparing young people for the workplace at an early age is really important – making sure they are aware of different career pathways and the skills and qualifications they need to progress.

“These events ensure that students in schools across the borough are starting to think about their next steps in both the later stages of primary school and as they start their high school years.

“The events in schools across the borough will give young people the opportunity to meet local employees and employers and find out more about how their careers have developed and resulted in where they are now.

“These sessions all aim to bridge the gap between education and the workplace and provide positive activities and experiences for young people which will stand them in good stead for employment.”

Life Ready Work Ready already has a team of business volunteers from different local business sectors which support events and help young people to become work ready but is on the lookout for more.

Sam Harvey, Life Ready Work Ready Co-ordinator at Telford & Wrekin Council, has been organising the summer activities.

Sam said: “We’re really excited to be offering this wide range of events for young people before the summer break.

“Employers are really supportive of these activities and we are very grateful to those who are committing their time to these activities to help young people on their career and employment journey.”
