Charity reaches more people with Veolia funding

Local residents are able to get support and advice with greater ease through a Citizens Advice outreach service, thanks to a £5,000 donation.

The donation from the UK’s leading resource management company, Veolia, is part of the added value element of the contract secured by Telford & Wrekin Council.

Citizens Advice Telford and the Wrekin, are a local independent charity based in Wellington. The purpose of the project was to make it easier for people in the Brookside area to access the charity’s services without needing to travel across the borough. The initiative includes a dedicated free phone at Brookside Central available for residents to contact Citizens Advice.

The project has supported 138 clients with a total of 611 issues, covering issues such as benefits, debt and housing, as well as legal, utilities and employment-related issues.

Councillor Arnold England, Deputy Mayor of the Borough of Telford and Wrekin and ward member for Brookside, said:

“Citizens Advice Telford and the Wrekin do some fantastic work in the local community. The advice and support they give is central to enabling resilient communities and improving the lives of residents. We’re delighted that funding from the Telford & Wrekin Council waste and recycling contractor Veolia is supporting our ambition to create a better borough.”

Veolia invests £25,000 back into the local community each year. Since taking over the waste contract in 2014, the company has given more than £200,000 to local community initiatives.

Steve Mitchell, Regional Director for Veolia, said:

“The information and advice offered by the Citizens Advice is vital to local residents, and getting easy access to that is really important. We are pleased to be supporting the initiative as part of our commitment to support our local community.”

Louise Cross, CEO at Citizens Advice Telford and the Wrekin, said:

"Delivering free impartial advice and information in communities makes a difference. With support from Veolia, we have been able to provide extra advice support for the community of Brookside.  We are now planning to improve the way people can access our services five days per week from the Brookside Central Community Centre and to provide face-to-face appointments.  All of this has been made possible with this funding. Thank You Veolia."
