Crack down on litter and fly-tipping in borough-wide campaign

Abandoned trollies, broken glass cleared up as well as fly tipping and litter picks, were all tackled as part of Telford & Wrekin Council’s borough-wide days of action taking place throughout the year, keeping the borough cleaner, greener and safer.

The third event this year, focussed on known hotspot areas including Boulton Grange, Dalford Court, Delbury and Dallamoor in Hollinswood which are areas often targetted from outside the area due to ease of location for people dumping items.

The multi-agency operation saw officers from Telford and Wrekin Council’s neighbourhood enforcement, community liaison, waste and anti-social behaviour teams, waste contractors Veolia and IdVerde as well as a public realm crew working with local police and the parish council. Each team was responsible for a host of issues enforceable by the council including fly-tipping investigations, CPE, abandoned vehicles, fly posting, dog fouling offences or littering offences.

Evidence was found at one of the fly tips, linking it to an address which the team is investigating with a view to securing a fixed penalty notice

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing, Enforcement and Transport, Councillor Richard Overton said: “These events are great because it gives residents a chance to speak directly with our enforcement teams about any issues they may be experiencing and secondly, because we are on the ground we are able to act quickly to sort things out.

“We want residents to know we are on their side and will hold people to account who are not sticking to the rules and costing tax payers money – something none of need right now.”

Schemes such as this have controbuted to Telford and Wrekin being named as the second cleanest city in the UK in a recent survey by ‘GetAgent’ which explores homeowner buying preferences. A clean city score of 8.26 (compared with winners Newcastle upon Tyne at 8.39) was generated by scoring a host of different factors from waste expenditure, air quality, recycling rates and overall cleanliness and tidiness.

Telford also topped the tables for resident ratings with the second highest score and came fourth overall, for household waste sent for recycling (per 10,000 people).
