High street businesses across Telford and Wrekin can put their stamp on the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations by entering a ‘best dressed window’ competition.

Queen's Platinum Jubilee opens window of opportunity for high street businesses

Businesses are being encouraged to give customers a royal welcome by decorating their windows to mark her Majesty’s 70 years on the throne.

High street celebration events are taking place in May and June across Telford and Wrekin borough towns which include Newport, Oakengates, Dawley, Ironbridge, Madeley and Wellington, together with Southwater, in recognition of the landmark milestone.

The competition will coincide with the celebrations and give shops and businesses the chance to enter into the carnival spirit and use it as an opportunity to promote their businesses and services to existing and new customers.

Prizes will be up for grabs for the best dressed windows in each of the borough towns which will be judged in the run-up to the Jubilee bank holiday weekend which starts on 2 June.

Entries must be based on a royal/Jubilee theme and the deadline for windows to be completed is Friday 13 May (5pm).

Businesses who are interested in taking part in the competition should register here.

A series of events are planned at Buckingham Palace and across the UK to mark Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s historic reign.

The competition is being staged through Telford & Wrekin Council’s Pride in Our High Street programme which supports new and existing businesses and helps them tackle the pressures that high streets face.

Councillor Lee Carter (Lab), Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, Regeneration and the High Street, said: “The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is a momentous occasion for the Telford and Wrekin community and Great Britain.

“This competition is an opportunity for high street shops and businesses to be creative and dress their windows in keeping with the Platinum Jubilee theme.

“We hope that as many businesses as possible will transform their windows, making them a sea of colour in the run-up to the Jubilee celebrations and mark this very special and once-in-a-lifetime anniversary.”

Since the Pride in Our High Street programme was launched in 2019, the council has issued 66 Revive and Thrive grants for start-up businesses (both pop up and physical shops) and only three have closed their doors during this time, demonstrating the effectiveness of the scheme.

Councillor Paul Watling (Lab), Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Safer and Stronger Communities, said: “High streets across Telford and Wrekin are celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee which will bring local people together for this historic landmark.

“We’re looking forward to seeing some stunning window displays and businesses creating a buzz in communities across the borough.”

Councillor Bob Wennington (Lab), Councillor for Dawley and Aqueduct, added: “Dawley is excited to be part of these celebrations and this competition is a way of highlighting everything that is good about Dawley and high street businesses in the town.”
