Council announces bulky items collection incentives

Telford & Wrekin residents are set to enjoy cheaper prices when they book bulky item collections from April*, following an announcement of new lower prices and further enhanced discounts by the council.

Council announces bulky items collection incentives

Telford & Wrekin Council's bulky item collection service enables residents to book collections of household items they no longer need, such as mattresses, washing machines and armchairs. Over the last 12 months the council has conducted more than 9,000 collections.

From 1 April the discount for residents in receipt of Council Tax Support and Housing Benefit will increase to 50%.

Residents aged over 80 will also benefit from a second free collection in addition to the existing single free collection which is currently available to residents aged over 65 and those who have a long-standing illness or disability that limits their daily activities.

In addition to these discounts, the council has also announced that its standard prices will reduce from 1 April, with the charge for collections of one to three items reducing from £18 to £15, collections of four to six items reducing from £36 to £28, seven to nine items will reduce from £54 to £43, and the charge for nine to twelve item collections will reduce from £72 to £56.

A 10% discount off standard prices is also available to Telford Loyalty Card holders.

Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, Regeneration and the High Street, Cllr Lee Carter (Labour), said:

“These are exceptional offers – a fraction of the price that residents have to pay in many neighbouring authorities. We recognise lots of people are facing economic challenges right now, so we’re bringing in these cheaper prices to help our residents, and to support people to dispose of their waste responsibly.

“When bulky items are collected, they are offered to charity partners for reusing, while non-reusable items are recycled wherever possible.

“Thanks to residents, our household recycling rates are well above the average recycling rate for England. These new discounts on our bulky waste collection service will mean that we are able to do even more to support the reuse and recycle agenda leaving no excuse for fly tipping. I’m also proud that, unlike other local councils, we are able to maintain free green waste collections, free weekly food waste collections and that our borough’s household recycling centres are open seven days a week.

“As a council, we are striving to protect, care and invest to make a better borough. One of our key priorities is that all neighbourhoods in Telford and Wrekin should be a great place to live.

“None of us wants to see fly-tipped waste in our streets and countryside. So these new prices and discounts make it easier than ever for everyone to get rid of bulky waste responsibly.

“Sadly, some people do not act responsibly. That’s why we have recently launched our new Telford and Wrekin Watch campaign. This is a brilliant tool for the community to help us identify fly-tippers in the borough and I would encourage residents to take a look.
