Cherry Trees to be planted in Telford Town Park, to mark a very special community event, taking place on Thursday 10th March as part of the delayed Love Telford event.
On Thursday 10 March Councillors Paul Watling, Kelly Middleton and Raj Mehta along with Mayor of the borough of Telford & Wrekin, Councillor Amrik Jhawar and members of the Telford & Wrekin Interfaith Council will be taking part in a tree planting ceremony at 12:30 in Telford Town Park.
Ten cherry trees are to be planted in the Teenage Activity Arena, to mark the coming together of the local community at Love Telford.
Councillor Raj Mehta (Labour), Chair of the Interfaith Council, said “As the Interfaith Council, it is our aim to bring unity to the community and support a cultural celebration in our borough such as Love Telford. It’s a great initiative to showcase the diversity, strength and unity of our community, a chance for residents to get involved and join in with a fun day out with their friends, family, neighbours and community. The Interfaith Council are pleased to be working in partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council to bring this event to the community.”
Councillor Paul Watling (Labour), Cabinet Member for Stronger and Safer Communities said: “I am pleased to be joined by my fellow councillors and members of the Interfaith Council to plant trees in honour of Love Telford, the first community event of 2022. Communities that come together and join in community events and celebrations have a strong sense of belonging and resilience and support one another. By planting trees to mark this occasion we are providing a lasting and living symbol of community spirit.”
Two types of cherry tree will be planted, Prunus Beni-yutaka and Prunus Somei-yoshino. These will complement the 83 cherry trees which were planted as part of the Sakura Cherry Tree Project last November. The blossom on these new trees will add colour and interest to the Teenage Activity Area during the spring and once established they will provide shade for visitors to sit under.
Love Telford is a cultural celebration taking place in Southwater on Saturday 19 March, with the support of local diverse communities, demonstrating what makes Telford great. The event will be an afternoon of art and sport activities, music and performance acts alongside representation from community groups from across the Telford and Wrekin borough.
