Ironbridge Traders Hopeful for a busy weekend

Shop and business owners in the Ironbridge Gorge are ‘hopeful’ for a busy weekend after counting the cost of flooding from the River Severn for the fourth time in three years.

Councillor Carolyn Healy, who represents the Ironbridge Gorge ward, said: “The community spirit throughout the gorge goes such a long way in helping people recover not just from the physical damage but also from the financial and emotional impact.

“It’s going to be a nice weekend and I am sure businesses here would appreciate a visit, not just to have some trade but also to give them a bit of a morale boost and help them on their way after what has been a difficult time – not just flooding but through Covid too.”

“This is such a tense time for all the communities in the Gorge from businesses to residents alike. It always amazes me how they can bounce back time and time again from the devastation of flooding, but more frequent flooding is taking its toll.

“While on the face of things everything looks back to normal, the barriers are down, footpaths are fixed and the roads swept and clean again, there is still lots of work going on to support those still affected and we’ll be with them every step of the way.”
