Following Storm Eunice and Storm Franklin, we are experiencing serious flooding in parts of Telford and Wrekin. Here's what you need to know.

Whilst it’s good news that there’s no longer considered to be a risk to life, there’s still lots of people affected as well as roads and low lying land.

We’re busy working alongside you on the clean-up - road sweeping, clearing debris, collecting sandbags and skips will be also be out today for residents needing to dispose of flood debris.

It would be helpful (only if you can) to leave used sandbags on the edge of footpaths to help crews with the clear up.

We’ll be in touch with everyone affected to see if there is any more help or support we can give.

Severe flood warning removed and major incident stood down

With water levels steadily falling, the Environment Agency have now downgraded their flood warning at the Wharfage from ‘severe’ to ‘flooding is expected’ and the multi-agency response team have removed the major incident status.

Whilst it’s good news that there’s no longer considered to be a risk to life, there’s still lots of people being affected by the flood water and we’re ready to work alongside you on the clean-up.

Relief as water level peaks just before overtopping flood defences at Ironbridge

Flood water from the River Severn peaked between 10pm and 2am last night at 6.65m, bringing relief after fears it would overtop temporary flood defences at the Wharfage in Ironbridge.

Telford & Wrekin Council, the Environment Agency and the emergency services closely monitored the river level through the night, concerned that it was likely to exceed 6.8 metres – the maximum level that the barriers could contain. Fortunately, the peak didn’t reach this level which would have led to even more devastation for the local area.

The river gauge at the Wharfage was measuring 6.62m as of 6.30am this morning and the flood waters are high but now slowly retreating.

Despite not breaching the defences, the area is still severely affected by flood waters and Environment Agency pumps are on site to reduce the impact as far as possible.

Local residents have been supported to evacuate affected properties.

Ironbridge

ROAD CLOSURE

Waterloo Street in Ironbridge is being closed at 4pm today due to rising water levels.

Please use Buildwas Bridge if you need to cross the river.

No access to The Wharfage at Ironbridge

The river level has now reached 6.2 metres in the area around The Wharfage at Ironbridge.

This means that it’s no longer safe to go behind the flood barriers and The Wharfage is closed to vehicles and pedestrians.

Please stay away from the area.

If we’ve contacted you to ask you to evacuate your property, and you’ve not yet done so, please get in touch using the details we’ve provided to you in the letter. We can arrange accommodation for you if you’re unable to stay with friends or family. We can also help with transport if you don’t have your own.

We will be in contact again today with all residents who are at risk of flooding across the Gorge to ensure they are safe and well and help where we are able to.

The Environment Agency have now moved to high ground next to the Museum of the Gorge. Their pumps are fuelled with high capacity fuel tanks and will operate for 4-5 days without attendance.

Please do not move any security fencing. It is there for everyone's protection

Please do not drive through flood waters. This is always dangerous, plus in built up areas it causes waves which are damaging nearby properties.

Buses

Services 8 & 18 serving Madeley as normal then diverting via the Ironbridge bypass direct to Much Wenlock, not serving the Gorge as the Lloyds is flooded and the section from the bottom of Madeley Bank is closed. No service to Jackfield.

Service 19, currently diverting after Lightmoor via the Lawley bypass and M54/A5 due to B4380 flooded at Atcham.

Ironbridge Gorge

MAJOR INCIDENT DECLARED

Danger to life - act now if you live in the affected area

The Environment Agency has upgraded the flood risk to severe in parts of Ironbridge, which is expected to peak at 6.8m-7m.

Council teams and contractors are working with the Environment Agency. Following their advice, we are asking and supporting residents to evacuate from this afternoon.

Those who need to evacuate will be spoken to in person and/or receive a letter from a member of our team. We’re expecting around 60 properties to be impacted by the flooding.

We would strongly advise people to avoid the Ironbridge Gorge area where possible, and not to drive through any flood waters.
