Winter sport galore in Telford and Wrekin
This February marks the Olympic Winter Games 2022 but did you know that Telford and Wrekin is also home to two fantastic winter sport facilities.
Telford Ice Rink and the Ski and Snowboard Centre in Madeley are both owned and managed by Telford & Wrekin Council Leisure and offer families the perfect setting to learn winter sports like skiing, snowboarding and ice skating in fun and safe environments.
In fact it’s not just residents using these two facilities – Telford Ice Rink see’s around 2,000 people through it’s doors from all over the West Midlands each week to take part in public skating, lessons, figure skating and ice hockey.
In January this year around 500 people visited the ski and snowboard centre too which is also home to the borough’s competitive ski team.
Sophie (aged 16) and Finlay (aged 14) have skied since they were 3 years old. They are members of Ski Team Telford where they visit the dry ski slope at least twice per week.
Finlay told us: “I am competitive so I love the challenge of racing! The team is a great community and it’s allowed me to make lots of friends who share the same interests as me. We all want to beat each other but we support each other and are proud of everyone’s achievement when someone improves. It’s competitive but in a good way!”
Nick, Finlay’s Dad and also chair of the Ski Team Telford added: “My favourite part of being Chairman is seeing the development of all our kids, from when they join, usually as good recreational skiers to being full blown confident racers, when they reach their teens.
“Telford Snowboard and Ski Centre is a brilliant facility, a hidden jewel tucked away in Madeley. Telford is extremely lucky to have such a super, well run facility and I would urge everyone in Telford to come down to the slope and make use of the activities on offer.”
Ski Team Telford is a Junior Race Club catering for racers between the ages of 6 and 21 years old. Their main training night is on Wednesday evenings, with our advanced training sessions taking place on Friday evenings. For more information visit skiteamtelford.co.uk
