Boulton's Butchers aims to be cream of the chop in Madeley

Boulton’s Artisan Butchery Ltd is a new addition to the town thanks to a £10,000 business start-up grant awarded through Telford & Wrekin Council’s Pride in Our High Street programme.

The new business launch means customers can now make the most of a quality butchers on their doorstep after an absence of 15 years without one in Madeley.

Owners Nikola and Martin Boulton already run a well-established butchers shop in Little Dawley but are hoping their new venture will take off in the Madeley community.

After looking at different venues they opted for Unit 13, Madeley Centre, New Road and will employ seven staff in the premises.

As well as selling locally sourced fresh meats, Boulton’s is also branching out as a delicatessen and artisan shop offering fish, bread, eggs, cakes and farm shop quality produce.

Highly-skilled butcher Martin has an extensive knowledge of the meat industry and worked as an apprentice butcher for Banks Butchers in Madeley in the early 1980s.

Nikola Boulton said: “We have been very much the talk of the town with the excitement waiting for us to open.

“We are very grateful for the support we’ve received from Telford & Wrekin Council with The Pride in Our High Street grant towards the project which has been an enormous help.

“We want to promote a community hub where everyone can come along for a pleasant catch up, do their shopping and hopefully leave with a smile on their faces.

“We welcome people’s ideas on what they would like us to sell and want to embrace the spirit of the community.

“This has been our dream and we are thrilled to open our doors in Madeley and hopefully give local people something which they have been missing for a long time.”

Boulton’s Butchers were given approval to trade as a butchers in Madeley by nearby Tesco as the store no longer has a meat counter and saw it as a benefit to Madeley.

Councillor Lee Carter (Lab), Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, Regeneration and the High Street, said: “The opening of Boulton’s Butchers is a welcome addition to Madeley and having a high quality butchers in the heart of the town has been missed for a long time.

“We are pleased to be able to continue our investment into our high streets through our Pride in Our High Street grant programme and which will continue to support businesses who want to open on the high street or to trial a new business initiative.

“Boulton’s will fill a huge gap in the market place and hopefully, it will inspire local people, encouraging them to shop local and support a new business.”
