Corbetts targets more females for expanding workforce

A long-standing Telford business is aiming to bridge the gender gap by encouraging more females to consider applying to join its expanding workforce.

Corbetts targets more females for expanding workforce

Halesfield-based Corbetts, which is the longest established and largest independent galvanisers in the UK, is increasing its employee count in all areas as part of a new chapter in its proud history.

The firm is targeting up to 50 new recruits in a variety of roles but is particularly keen to attract more females to consider applying to work within the business as operatives.

In 2021, two females joined the production team and are progressing through their crane and forklift training with aspirations to move onto the Supervisor Training Programme.  .

Skills for the roles are transferrable from different sectors but a full training and development programme, called the Iron Duke Academy, is available to both new starters and existing team members and includes both in house training on the galvanizing line and external lean manufacturing and 5s techniques.

These training programmes give employees the opportunity to gain new skills and achieve industry recognised qualifications.

Some of the benefits of working for Corbetts include an attractive and flexible work life balance, which is appealing to a wide range of people including stay-at-home mums, and opportunities to progress into supervisory roles.

Employing new recruits, both male and female, will open up new shifts, increase productivity and maximise production at the firm’s purpose-built site.

Over the years, Corbetts has developed an excellent reputation for developing a partnering approach with customers, providing them with the best solutions to their galvanizing needs.

The firm galvanises items such as structural steel lighting columns, trailer chassis and fencing.

Councillor Eileen Callear (Lab), Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Visitor Economy, Employment and Skills, said: “Corbetts has been established in Telford for over 160 years and has an excellent reputation.

“Despite its proud history, the business isn’t resting on its laurels and is keen to expand.

“It’s particularly pleasing to see the firm reaching out to encourage more women to apply to join the business because they still remain highly underrepresented in this industry.

“This recruitment drive will open up some fantastic employment opportunities for local people, both male and female, to join Corbetts on the next stage of its journey.”

Corbetts Finance Director & General Manager Sophie Williams started out at Corbetts as an Invoicing Clerk and has worked her way up to her current role.

Sophie said: “2022 is an exciting time to join the Corbetts family. We have developed a new and fully bespoke Training Academy that will help support our existing team and attract new talent into our business.

“No previous galvanizing experience is necessary -we are looking for dedicated team members who have a thirst to learn new skills.”
