Telford and Wrekin Council is ready to support businesses affected by coronavirus in light of the current increase in cases of the Omicron variant, as soon as more information and the funding is available.

Telford & Wrekin Council calling for more information and access to funding to support businesses in battle against Omicron

It is hoped that businesses in the borough will soon be able to access this new support funding, after the government announced new measures earlier this week including:

  • Businesses in the hospitality and leisure sectors to be eligible for one-off grants of up to £6,000 per premises.
  • Government to cover the cost of Statutory Sick Pay for covid-related absences for small and medium sized employers in the UK.
  • £30m additional funding through the Culture Recovery Fund, enabling more cultural organisations in England to apply for support during the winter.
  • To support other businesses impacted by the omicron variant, such as those who supply the hospitality and leisure sectors, £100 million nationally in Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG)

Councillor Shaun Davies, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “We welcome this much needed support, but need more information, and the funding allocation as soon as possible, as businesses locally are already struggling as a result of the surge in cases of the omicron variant.

“Throughout the pandemic this council has acted swiftly to support businesses across Telford and Wrekin and will continue to do so, on many occasions during the pandemic our performance was in the top 10 councils nationally in terms of getting money to our businesses.

“All we know are the headlines of the new measures announced, but our businesses need help now. The sooner we have further information and can access the funding allocated to our area, the sooner we can pass this on and support local employers.”

Subject to receiving details of eligibility criteria and financial allocation from government, we stand ready to get the money to our businesses promptly.
