Covid-19 infection rates still high in Telford and Wrekin
The number of new coronavirus cases in Telford and Wrekin has slightly increased again in the last week and is well above the national and regional average, the latest figures show.
There were 1,099 new Coronavirus cases reported for Telford and Wrekin during the past seven days (18-24 October), 40 more than the previous seven-day period.
For the week ending 24 October, the Covid-19 situation in the borough is:
• 1,099 new Covid-19 cases reported, 40 more compared to the previous week
• The seven-day infection rate for Telford and Wrekin is 606 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000
• For the West Midlands, the seven-day infection rate is 444 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000
• For England, the seven-day infection rate is 466 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000
• No further deaths have been reported within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test (The total number of borough deaths since the start of the pandemic is 278)
• There were 38 patients with Covid-19 in local hospitals as of 27 October
Helen Onions, Telford and Wrekin's Acting Statutory Director for Public Health, said:
"Telford and Wrekin has the highest Covid-19 infection rates since the start of the pandemic, which is worrying.
“There are fewer cases in younger people (under 20s) but more in middle aged and older adults. In the last week our local hospitals are also dealing with a higher number of patients.
“Each of us can help keep life moving in our borough and reduce the pressure on the local NHS.
“Hands-face-space-fresh air is really important, simple steps can make a big difference.
“Testing regularly is also essential, so cases can be identified earlier and the spread reduced.
“Please continue to check for Covid at least twice a week with lateral flow tests, even if you are feeling well. If you have symptoms, however mild, book a PCR test.
"All these help save lives and keep our community safe. Thank you to everyone for making them part of their routine."
Cllr Andy Burford, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said:
“As we see local cases on the rise, it’s ever so important that many more in our borough get vaccinated.
"To stay healthy and keep your loved ones safe, make sure you get both doses of Covid-19 vaccine and the booster (when you are eligible for it).
"I had my Covid-19 booster vaccine and I encourage everyone eligible to go and have it without any delay.
“If you are aged 50 and over (or meet other eligibility conditions) and you had your 2nd dose a minimum of 6 months (182 ago), then go ahead for the booster.
“Simply book your appointment on the NHS website or drop in to one of the walk-in clinics in the borough. No need to wait to be contacted by the NHS.
“We are working closely with the local NHS to expand vaccination for 12-15 years old with out-of-school pop-up clinics as soon as possible.”
