Continued success for recipients of Young Person Grant
64 young people in Telford and Wrekin have been awarded over £15,000 from the Leader and Cabinet’s Young Person Grant 2021, enabling them to gain education, employment or training opportunities that might not have access to otherwise.
The Leader and Cabinet’s Young Person Grant, now at its fourth cycle, helps young people across the borough to excel in their chosen field and reach their future goals.
Over the years the scheme has included specific awards for sporting activities, performing arts, education, employment and training.
Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council Cllr Shaun Davies said: “I’m delighted at the great success of our young people across the borough, it’s wonderful to see how the Young Person Grant has helped them achieve their ambitions.
“To date, the Young Person Grant has provided 232 young people with a total of £57,202 which has seen the creation of new businesses, launch of successful careers and our young people feeling supported in their creative passions.
“Our Young Person Grant scheme will continue to help the borough’s younger residents gain the support they need for a brighter future.”
Yen Tran, aged 20 from Malinslee, is a recipient of the 2021 Young Person Grant. She is seeking to fund her university placement year in London which will give her the experience to launch her career.
Yen said: “It was pretty surprising to find out I had been successful for the Young Person Grant. I’m extremely grateful to have been awarded the funding and it will really help with my placement.
“I’m excited to be working as a tech consultant at the engineering firm Atkins. It’s a great opportunity for me to improve my skillsets and advance my career in tech.
“As we all know, living costs in London can be quite shocking so the Young Person Grant funding helps to me make the most of my placement year by taking some of the financial pressure off.”
