Gather seeds to grow trees for the future
Telford & Wrekin Council is launching a local campaign to support The Tree Council’s annual Seed Gathering Season to show how easy it is to gather seeds to grow your own trees.
‘Seeds4TW’ runs through to 22 October, and now is the perfect time to gather seeds, fruits and nuts to grow your own trees. It is also a fun, free activity that anyone can get involved in.
Cllr Carolyn Healy, Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for climate change, green spaces, natural and historic environment, said: “We can all do something to save our planet. We can reduce, reuse and recycle, and we can plant a tree from seed.
“Now more than ever, the value of trees is being recognised. They store carbon, reduce pollution, provide homes for our wildlife and they are beautiful.”
During the month long campaign, the council is hoping to inspire people to gather seeds, fruits and nuts which can be nurtured to grow the trees of the future.
Cllr Peter Scott, ward councillor for Newport has been growing trees from seed for many years and is keen to show how easy it is. He said: "Planting trees from seed is really easy to do. You don’t need to be a tree expert or have any special equipment.
“There’s nothing better than growing your own tree from seed. The idea that you can grow an oak tree that could live for 500 years is incredible when you think about it. Although, you probably wouldn’t want an oak in your garden, there are so many varieties to choose from that are easy to grow.
“Cultivating trees from seed is also a great way to get children involved and start growing the next generation of tree enthusiasts.”
The Tree Council has lots of information, tree fact sheets and tips on planting from seed on its website.
Cllr Healy added: “With the threat of pests and diseases, growing trees from healthy local tree stock is a great way forward and will help us make sure our treescape continues to thrive for generations to come.
“Let’s get gathering.”
