Telford and Wrekin – highest Covid-19 infection rate in West Midlands
The number of new coronavirus cases in Telford and Wrekin is increasing for the fifth week in a row, latest figures show.
Currently, Telford and Wrekin has the highest Covid-19 infection rates in West Midlands and the 6th highest nationally.
There were 828 new Coronavirus cases reported for Telford and Wrekin during the past seven days (30 August – 5 September), 143 more than the previous seven-day period.
For the week ending 5 September, the Covid-19 situation in the borough is:
• 828 Covid-19 cases reported, 143 more compared to the previous week
• The seven-day infection rate for Telford and Wrekin is 457 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000
• For the West Midlands, the seven-day infection rate is 344 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000
• For England, the seven-day infection rate is 335 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000
• Sadly, there have been two further deaths reported within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test (The total number of borough deaths since the start of the pandemic is 270)
• There were 31 patients with Covid-19 in local hospitals as of 8 September.
Cllr Andy Burford, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said:
“In the last weeks there has been a significant growth in cases in younger people, which unfortunately led to our borough currently having the highest infection rate in West Midlands.
“This is really worrying!
“Many of those who get really ill with Covid-19 haven’t been vaccinated. As of 7 September, there are still around 31,000 people in our borough (aged 16 plus) who haven’t received their first Covid-19.
“Again, our plea for them is to get their vaccination without delay. It is the best way to protect themselves.
"Several Covid-19 walk-in vaccination clinics continue to be available across the borough - no appointment needed. Or you can book your own vaccination slot on the NHS website.
"If you have any vaccination concerns please speak with your GP or with the clinicians at a walk-in clinic.”
Liz Noakes, Telford and Wrekin's Director for Public Health, said:
"Infection rates in our borough are on a concerning ascending trend and among the top nationally - we can expect this to continue, also due to schools return.
“To get the number down and avoid others getting seriously ill, we now need everyone to be part of the new “normality” even after getting their vaccinations.
“It’s normal to continue to check for covid regularly with rapid tests at home and get a PCR test immediately if you have symptoms, however mild.
“It’s normal to keep to hands–face-space and fresh air as much as you can.
“It’s normal to self-isolate and get tested when asked to by NHS Test and Trace.
