Covid-19 isolation rules impact on green bin collections in limited areas of Telford

Limited areas of Telford and Wrekin will experience some disruption to green waste and recycling services this week, due to increasing collection crew isolations as a result of Covid-19 rules.
A total of 13 percent of staff including supervisors and office workers who also help on rounds, have been forced to isolate.

The impact currently only affects rounds of green bin collections in the following areas

  • Hollinswood & Sutton Hill
  • Dawley & Aqueduct
  • Ketley & Overdale

Collection crews are working hard in extreme heat and all available resources are being pulled together to do as much as possible to keep disruption to a minimum.

If your collection was due yesterday or for today, the advice is:

  • If your green bin for garden waste isn’t collected by the end of today, please leave it out until 5pm tomorrow (Saturday 24 July) as it may be collected on additional rounds.
  • If your green bin is not collected by 5pm on Saturday 24 July, please return it to your property and present on your next scheduled collection day.

Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood, Commercial Services and Regeneration, Councillor Lee Carter said: “This is the first time collections have been affected and we’re doing everything we can to ensure disruption is kept to an absolute minimum.

“We recognise how frustrating this will be for residents but it’s a national issue affecting councils up and down the country – in some areas green collections have been completely suspended with other waste services under increasing pressure.

“We are hopeful of an announcement from Government to relax isolation rules allowing recycling and refuse crews to continue with collections. Until then we are doing everything we can - using temporary agency staff and people from other contracts, services and partners such as Balfour Beatty. We’ve stretched resources as far as safely possible with minimum numbers of crews on rounds.

“Residents have been incredibly supportive of crews throughout earlier waves of the pandemic as they maintained collections and we would ask for that same support until we resolve this issue.

“We are asking everyone to please bear with us while we continue to collect wherever possible.

“Red top and food caddies will continue to be prioritised with collections currently continuing as normal however we are mindful of the potential for further impact.”

Currently recycling and waste collection services and household recycling centres are operating with no significant disruption, and hope that this will continue to be the case over the coming weeks, though this will depend on staffing levels.
