Council supports businesses impacted by the new national restrictions

Telford & Wrekin Council continues to support businesses in the borough hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

Council supports businesses impacted by the new national restrictions

Businesses forced to close until 2 December due to the new national restrictions can now apply for grants by completing this online form on the Council’s coronavirus website www.telford.gov.uk/coronavirus  - ‘I am a business’ section.

Applications are now open.

Applications will be assessed during November, as the Council will continue to work hard to get this essential support to eligible businesses as quickly as possible.
In the first lockdown, the Council was one of the quickest in the country to distribute Government grants to qualifying businesses.

Government says that businesses required to close can apply for following grants based on their rateable value:

• FOR PROPERTIES WITH A RATEABLE VALUE OF £15K OR UNDER
Grant award of £1,334 per four weeks

• FOR PROPERTIES WITH A RATEABLE VALUE OF BETWEEN £15K - £51K

Grant award of £2,000 per four weeks

• FOR PROPERTIES WITH A RATEABLE VALUE OF £51K OR OVER
Grant award of £3,000 per four weeks

Borough businesses who need support and advice in applying for these grants can contact the Council’s dedicated Business Support team on 01952 567589 (9am—5pm, Mon-Fri, 9am – 1pm Saturdays until 2 Dec) or visit www.telford.gov.uk/coronavirus  and click on “I am a Business” icon.

In the next few days, the Council will also be contacting eligible businesses directly to advise them to apply for these grants.

The Council will also soon launch a new Discretionary Business Grants Fund to continue to support other borough businesses which have not been forced to close by the lockdown, but who are experiencing severe losses of income due to the pandemic.

More details about this and any qualifying criteria will be published as soon as these are agreed.

Cabinet Member for Council Finance and Governance, Councillor Rae Evans said:
“We know many borough businesses continue to face very serious financial challenges due to the pandemic.

“As earlier in the year, our Business Support team will be working to help businesses severely impacted by the pandemic to apply for and receive Government grants as quickly as possible.

“As such, we are urging all businesses forced to close until 2 December to complete this online form on www.telford.gov.uk/coronavirus and access these grants as quickly as possible.

“We will also be launching our own discretionary business grant scheme soon to help businesses who continue to operate but are struggling financially.
“Once again, however, I fear the demand for help from businesses will outstrip what we can actually do and fund.

“In the coming days, we will also be contacting borough businesses directly to advise them of the grant support available and guide them through the application process.”
