More support for deaf people who are self-isolating
Telford & Wrekin Council is working on a close collaboration with a charity that supports deaf people to provide support to those who are self isolating.
The council has forged close links with Signal, who are working as the link between deaf individuals and the council.
The older British Sign Language community are almost all deaf without speech and also have limited literary levels, meaning they struggle to access available support.
It has become apparent since the coronavirus pandemic lockdown began that deaf people who are self-isolating or shielding need help with shopping and the collection of medication.
While the numbers affected are not high, it is predicted that the numbers might rise over the coming weeks as more people become ill or decide to stay home and shield.
Signal is a charity that has been supporting Deaf people across the county of Shropshire for over 100 years
Signal supports the Deaf community in Telford and Wrekin and in Shropshire with opportunities to socialise (with monthly lunch groups), with organised trips and experiences and with one-to-one outreach support for individuals who require additional support.
Councillor Paul Watling, cabinet member for Co-operative Communities, Engagement and Partnership, said: “These are incredibly difficult times for the whole population but none more so than our vulnerable communities.
“However I am delighted that the council has forged this collaboration with Signal and it will mean that we can provide support for the deaf community over the coming weeks and months.”
