Coronavirus – Telford & Wrekin Council keeping you safe
Thank you to everyone for reporting premises that you have seen open when they shouldn’t be.
In order to keep you safe, our Public Protection officers have gone out every day, including at night, this week to follow up those reports. On Monday and Tuesday nights they visited 20 reported premises. They also checked all of Wellington, Dawley and Newport town centres. Further visits are being made across the borough with the help of West Mercia Police.
Remember, the Government’s rules mean pubs can continue to trade as off-licences and food takeaways. Our licensing officers are prioritising those applications from businesses who want to carry on trading that way – as long as they continue to practise social distancing.
We have also been visiting roadside cafes who have all agreed to close as they are not able to adhere to the social distancing guidance, except for one which will continue to operate as a delivery-only service.
Our officers have also received many enquiries from residents who are concerned about whether they should be at work and how to apply social distancing at work. We are responding to all these enquiries and speaking to companies, giving them advice on how to comply with the important need to ensure that people are kept two metres apart.
This government list states which businesses must be closed. These must remain closed. We have officers, backed up by the police out throughout the borough to make sure they stay shut.
Any that are found to be open will be made to close and they will face prosecution.
Councillor Richard Overton, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Enforcement, said: "The government has produced guidance stating what businesses must be closed. Our officers, with support from West Mercia Police, are out patrolling the Borough to make sure that those businesses that have been instructed to close, comply with the Government orders which are now law. Our officers and the police are undertaking these duties to ensure the safety of our public. We will take action on anyone who flouts the law."
