Recognition for teams’ efforts to combat climate change

Telford & Wrekin Council’s catering and cleaning teams have won the APSE National Green Innovation (Facilities Management) Award!

The two teams have been working together to reduce their carbon footprint by reducing single-use plastic and recycling food waste into fuel. Both services are strong advocates for climate change initiatives and have been doing much to reduce their impact.

Some examples of that the catering team have been doing are:

  • Returning recyclable packaging back to their suppliers, and the use of fully compostable plant-based disposables within catering units.
  • Introduced a large purgal milk machine into Café Go which has reduced the use of single-use plastic by 20 bottles per week;
  • Trailed a reusable deposit cup scheme in Café Go – reducing the use of fully-compostable take out cups.
  • The catering team have also reduced the use of Clingfilm in school kitchen and their waste oil is collected by our main food supplier and is recycled for fuel.

The cleaning team have also been busy making environmental changes, including:

  • Removing all desk bins in corporate buildings to support the recycling initiative to encourage staff to use recycling stations located on each floor.
  • They introduced recyclable toilet paper and have stopped using single-use cloths.
  • The core products the cleaning team use are Jangro Enviro Range - these are concentrated in 1litre containers, reducing packaging and storage.

The two teams have also replaced the traditional bin liners across both services with 100% recycled plastic bags from a local company.

Councillor Carolyn Healy, cabinet member with responsibility for climate change, said: “I’d like to take the opportunity to congratulate the cleaning and catering teams who have won this award – it’s such great recognition for the work they have been doing and the changes they have made.

“This is also brilliant news for the Council’s overall efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and impact on climate change.”
