Veolia help reduce local unemployment

The Telford & Wrekin Council recycling and waste contractor has given £13,000 in the last four years to Job Box, an employment support initiative in the borough.

The funds have enabled the delivery of bespoke projects for people who were long-term unemployed through 1:1 mentoring, interview skills and help applying for jobs.
Each year’s project focused on overcoming specific barriers such as age, confidence and needing specific training to access a job area. For example providing necessary health and
safety training for people to enter the construction industry.

Cllr Shirley Reynolds, cabinet member for Young People and Education, said: “People who are long-term unemployed can face significant barriers to getting into work.
“This funding enables us to work with some of these people and to find ways to overcome some of these barriers.”

Cllr Richard Overton, cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, Enforcement & the Pride Programme said: “We’re really grateful to Veolia for this funding, as well as the other
environmental grants they have provided as part of their value added contract.”

Steve Mitchell (pictured), Director West Midlands at Veolia, said: “We’re pleased to have supported so many local people through working with Job Box. Veolia is committed to giving added value to the local community and so far £100,000 has been given to a variety of community initiatives in the borough since we began working in partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council in 2014.
