New initiative to bring faith groups together

Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet member for Communities & Diversity has launched a new initiative to celebrate the rich cultural diversity in Telford.

Cllr Raj Mehta has helped to form a new interfaith council, incorporating representatives from six different faith groups, Sikh, Hindu, Christian, Islam and Jewish, as well as officers from West Mercia police and the council.

The group will meet quarterly to build community ties, as well as supporting key cultural celebration days throughout the year.

Cllr Raj Mehta, cabinet member for Communities and Diversity, who was appointed chair of the council, said: “A key part of my role is to foster good relations and build bridges between people of different backgrounds and faiths.

“In the borough today, we have so many people of different faiths and beliefs living side by side.

“The opportunity lies before us to work ever more closely together to build a society rooted in the common values we treasure.”
