YMCA Wellington nominated for two national awards
Local charity YMCA Wellington which works in partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council has been nominated for two national awards.
Members of the public can vote now for the charity which is committed to helping young people in the borough at times of hardship.
The Wellington based charity are shortlisted for YMCA of the Year and Family Work Project Award for their work with the Holly Project, a scheme set up last year to help survivors of child sexual exploitation and their families.
The Council provides financial help to YMCA Wellington each year for a number of different projects to support vulnerable people in the borough.
One key area the charity works on is helping to tackle homelessness and the Council helps fund its Thrive initiative set up five years ago to provide specialist housing support for vulnerable 16 to 25 years olds. The project also provides “floating support” and drop in sessions to enable individuals access support to help them to live independently.
The council also funds the Holly Project which is led by the YMCA Wellington team to provide independent support services for survivors of child sexual exploitation and their families in the borough.
Wellington YMCA is also the Mayor’s chosen charity for 2019.
YMCA Wellington are also active members in the community and support the council with various initiatives which aim to improve the area such as the Love Wellington campaign. This campaign was set up by a group of people who have a shared love for Wellington and are committed to helping to promote the town.
Councillor Raj Mehta, Cabinet Member for Communities and Inclusivity said: “We are extremely proud of how we work very closely with the team at YMCA Wellington and the great work they do to provide a number of services for people in the borough.
“Their efforts in protecting and supporting individuals in need are outstanding. It’s a great example of how we work together with community organisations to provide extra services.
