Primary schools encouraged to enter road safety competition
Primary schools across Telford and Wrekin are being encouraged to enter a competition to create the next road safety message for the display on the community traffic roundabout at Hortonwood.
The competition is a partnership between Hortonwood automotive company DENSO, Telford & Wrekin Council and the Shropshire Star newspaper.
Each school can submit up to four entries from the following categories:
1. Bikeability
2. Be Bright, Be Seen
3. Seatbelt Safety
4. Pedestrian Safety
Designs must be circular, have a simple clear image and be a team effort by pupils.
There will be four overall winners – one per category – and winners will have their designs displayed on the living wall for the community to see.
They will also be invited to join a technology, innovation and safety workshop at DENSO, have their design published in the Shropshire Star , receive a framed copy of it for display in their school and also receive a bursary of £500 to promote road safety in school.
Councillor Hilda Rhodes, Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for Transport, said: “This is a great opportunity for schools to create an eye-catching design.
“The competition will also help to reinforce road safety messages for young people and I want to thank DENSO for helping us to do that.”
DENSO spokesman Phil Tomlinson said: “As an automotive company, road safety is vitally important to us and that is why we have formed this partnership to launch the competition.
“I am really looking forward to receiving creative designs from local schools, choosing the winners and seeing their designs on the community traffic island outside our plant.
“When a school has created its artwork, they should keep the original somewhere safe and email an image of it to roadsafety@telford.gov.uk by Friday March 29. Winners will be announced in May.”
Telford & Wrekin Council’s road safety team has been building a close partnership with DENSO over the past year, which has seen DENSO subsidise the Bikeability programme, resulting on a growth in numbers.
DENSO has also donated hi-vis clothing for pedestrian training and some road safety equipment as a result of the partnership.
