Moving ceremony to mark Holocaust Memorial Day
Telford & Wrekin Council marked Holocaust Memorial Day with a moving civic ceremony attended by invited guests including the military and local school children.
The event took place on Friday at the Council’s Addenbrooke House offices in Telford Town Centre and was opened by borough mayor Councillor Raj Mehta.
Supporting this year’s national theme Torn From Home, readings were given by Holy Trinity Academy pupils Wiktor Tyl and Julia Bloch.
There was also a moving speech from Dr Eve Clevenger and a video of the Council’s Apprentice Fatemah Rahmeh, who moved with her family from war-torn Syria to the UK in 2017.
Dr Clevenger and the two pupils each lit a candle followed by a minute’s silence and Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member Councillor Rae Evans closed the event with a few words about Telford.
Attendees then toured a special exhibition put on by the Council to help remember the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.
Councillor Mehta said: “This was a very moving event which I was proud to host. We must never forget the victims of these terrible atrocities.”
