Small Business Saturday puts local businesses in the spotlight

Local independent shops are being put in the spotlight through an initiative that encourages people to shop local this Christmas.

Small Business Saturday puts local businesses in the spotlight

Small Business Saturday is taking place across the UK on 1 December and is aimed at supporting small businesses and highlighting the goods and services they offer.

As well as being Small Business Saturday, the day is one of the busiest shopping days as people bank their November paycheque and prepare for Christmas.

Local business the Cavern Sports Bar & Grill is glad for the awareness that Small Business Saturday raises and also for the support it is getting from Telford & Wrekin Council.

This week, in the run up to Saturday, the Council has awarded the business a £10,000 Empty Unit Incentive Grant to support the opening of the new bar in Ironbridge.

The grant is one of the many ways the Council is supporting local businesses as part of its Pride in Our Community High Street initiative.

Councillor Lee Carter, Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for finance, commercial services and economic development, handed over the grant cheque today (28 November) to business partners Oliver Humphries and Aidan O’Leary.

He said: “These grants are helping businesses to realise their dreams, create jobs and breathe new life into high streets.

“The unit in Ironbridge has stood empty for a while, and so it is great to see this new bar opening.  Local businesses like this one have so much to offer and I would urge everyone to support their small businesses and shop local – not just on Small Business Saturday, but over the festive period and beyond.  I wish Oliver and Aidan every success for the future.”

Oliver said: “The bar will bring something a little different to Ironbridge. It’s a fabulous location with a lovely local community.  As a World Heritage Site, it also attracts people from far and wide.  We are really excited to welcome both locals and visitors to enjoy what we have to offer.”

The Cavern Sports Bar & Grill opens at 29 High Street, Ironbridge on Friday 14 December.
