Disability friendly panto performances

This year’s pantomime at Oakengates Theatre @ The Place will be accessible to even more people thanks to two disability friendly performances for children and adults who may not be comfortable in a traditional theatre setting.

Disability friendly panto performances

The relaxed performance, which is on Saturday 5 January 2019 at 11am, has been specially designed to welcome families and groups who would benefit from a more relaxed environment, including people with an Autism Spectrum Condition, sensory and communication disorders, or a learning disability. Theatre lighting, special effects and sound levels which can be unsettling will be adjusted to reflect the audience’s needs.

A BSL (British Sign Language) interpreter will also support the show on Friday 28 December at 6.30pm enabling BSL users to experience a uniquely described theatre performance.

James Shone of Shone Productions, who brought us the pantomime said: “The lighting inside the auditorium will be left on as darkness can often be frightening. We will be reducing any special effects, such as strobe lighting and noises that could be too loud and alarming so that there is a more relaxing atmosphere. We understand some of the audience will need to move freely and get out of their seats and they are welcome to do this without worrying they are causing disruption, unlike a traditional theatre setting.”

This disability friendly shows provide a whole new experience for families or groups of friends who may have avoided a trip to the theatre in the past – they can now feel comfortable to enjoy live theatre show.

Councillor John Minor, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Leisure, said: “Telford’s pantomime is attracting more and more people every year, from both Telford and out of the area. We are always proud to offer this disability friendly show which allow even more people to come and experience our pantomime ensuring they are comfortable in their surroundings.”

Cinderella starts on Tuesday 11 December and runs until Sunday 6 January 2019 and stars Eastenders’s Tony Discipline as Prince Charming and 90’s Pop Star (Lolly) Anna Kumble as Fairy Godmother.

Tickets start from £10 and are available from www.theplacetelford.com. People can also call the box office on 01952 382382 or buy in person at the theatre and Southwater One.
