Mayor signs up to become a Street Champion
The Mayor of Telford and Wrekin councillor Raj Mehta has signed up to help improve his local community by becoming a Street Champion.
He joins the growing number of Street Champions in Telford and Wrekin who are volunteering their time to make a difference in their communities.
Last week, the Telford & Wrekin Council’s Pride in Our Community Street Champion initiative clocked up its 500th volunteer with Majd Almoustafa from Trench.
Together they act as the eyes and ears of the Council and report issues of concern in their neighbourhoods, such as fly tipping, dog fouling, litter or damaged street furniture. They pick up litter in their local area, organise group litter picks, undertake improvements to untidy pieces of land in their area and also help out with bigger clean ups in parks and other local beauty spots.
The Mayor brings the tally of Street Champions to 501.
Cllr Mehta said: “I am very happy to be joining this great group of volunteers. I have been out with them on a few litter picks already and what they achieve in a matter of hours is quite something. I was at the Big Wrekin Clean up a couple of weeks ago and everyone just got stuck in and collected more than 70 bags of rubbish. It was then that I decided to sign up officially to join them and become a Street Champion.
“We can all do our bit to keep our environment looking nice and so I hope others will consider joining.”
