Speed indicators to improve safety by Lawley Primary School
Speed indicator devices have been installed on Pepper Mill outside of Lawley Primary School as part of a safety scheme to remind motorists to stick to the 20mph speed limit.
The devices have been installed in response to concerns raised by the school about motorists not sticking to the speed limit, and has been delivered using joint funding from Telford & Wrekin Council and Lawley Primary School.
Now motorists approaching the school from both directions of Pepper Mill will have their speed flashed at them as they approach and a smiley face will then flash up if they are travelling at the right speed or a sad face if they are not.
The devices also collect data so the Council can monitor the overall traffic speeds in the area which will help inform if any further measures are needed to improve safety.
Counillor Raj Mehta, Mayor of the Borough of Telford and Wrekin, joined the head teacher Carol McQuiggin and junior road safety officers Amber and Ellie to see the speed indicator devices installed today (12 September).
Councillor Mehta said: “These devices are an effective way of reminding motorists of the speed limit and slowing them down. It was good to see them installed and interesting also to see how motorists responded as they drove by. Our road safety and highways team will continue to work with the school to improve safety, but these devices definitely get a smiley face from me, the head teacher and Amber and Ellie.”
The Lawley Primary School road safety scheme is in addition to a £600,000 investment by the Council to improve safety outside of schools as part of its Pride in Our Community capital programme for 2018/19.
