Public information event about Hollies Road improvements
A public information event about the upcoming improvements to Hollies Road and the surrounding area in Wellington takes place this Friday (3 August), 2pm to 8pm at Hesba Close communal centre.
The major improvements to the area are happening as part of Telford & Wrekin Council’s Pride in Our Community 2018/19 capital investment programme.
Improvements will include the reconstruction and resurfacing of all roads and footpaths along Hollies Road, Orleton Lane, Cranage Crescent and Steventon Road with kerb replacements where needed. Signs and ironwork in these streets will be replaced and the existing traffic calming measures on Hollies Road and Orleton Lane will be upgraded. A permanent weight restriction for through traffic on Hollies Road and Orleton Lane will be imposed to stop HGV traffic using them as a cut through. Spring Hill will also be resurfaced between the roundabout and the Orleton Lane junction.
Locals raised concerns about the condition of the roads and footpaths in 2016 and petitioned their local councillor Graham Cook to take action. They also expressed their concerns about speeding traffic and HGVs using the area as a cut through.
The Council has since been working through an extensive feasibility study and drawing up plans for the improvement works needed. Earlier this year, the Council confirmed that it had allocated around £600,000 from its Pride in Our Community investment programmed to deliver the improvements needed.
Work starts on 17 September and is expected to be completed by mid-December. Temporary road closures will need to be in place to deliver the improvement, but these will be phased in order to keep disruption to local residents and businesses to a minimum.
Letters have been delivered to residents and businesses explaining what will be happening, giving advice on parking and access during the works, and the timescales. Other stakeholders, including emergency services, have also been advised of the upcoming work programme.
The public information session on Friday will give everyone the opportunity to view the plans and talk to the team delivering the project.
Councillor Hilda Rhodes, Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for transport and roads, said: “Our 2018/19 Pride in Our Community programme will see £7.5m invested in more than 340 improvement schemes across the borough. The improvements in and around Hollies Road are a significant investment, which we very much hope will address the concerns people have raised.
“As with most projects on this scale, there’s likely to be some disruption whilst the work is happening. We will do all we can to keep this to a minimum and ask people to please bear with us and to let us know if they have an issue at any stage during the works.”
