Telford shows support for England ahead of Belgium clash
Telford has sent a message of support to Gareth Southgate’s England team – ahead of tonight’s World Cup Group G clash with Belgium.
Council leader Councillor Shaun Davies and mayor Councillor Raj Mehta donned AFC Telford United shirts at the Buck’s Head Stadium to demonstrate the borough’s support for England.
They were joined by AFC Telford United’s Football Operations Manager Luke Shelley on the pitch at the Buck’s Head in the afternoon sun.
England and their Flemish opponents have already qualified for the Round of 16 but tonight’s game will determine which country wins Group G and which comes second – with either Japan, Senegal or Colombia waiting in the next round.
Councillor Davies said: “I feel there is a really patriotic feeling and increased optimism as a result of England’s first two wins in the group and I am delighted that we were able to demonstrate that Telford supports England.
“Tonight will be a tough game but I am confident and have predicted a 2-0 win for England. I would like to say thank you to all at our football club for helping to make the picture happen today.”
AFC Telford United has a pre-season friendly at the Buck's Head against Championship side Aston Villa on Saturday 14 July, which will coincide with an open day featuring live music, a bouncy castle, food and drink.
