Southwater One to be lit up to support England’s World Cup bid

Telford’s Southwater One building is going to be illuminated with patriotic red and white lights every night while England’s World Cup campaign continues.

The lights will come on from 9pm every night as the council’s shows its support for Gareth Southgate’s young lions by illuminating the building in England’s colours..


England started their campaign with a last gasp 2-1 victory on Monday night against Tunisia thanks to a late header from skipper Harry Kane.


Next up in Group G is an intriguing clash on Sunday against World Cup debutants Panama – who started with a 3-0 defeat against Belgium.


Victory would virtually ensure England’s qualification for the Round of 16, with opposition coming from one of Colombia, Japan, Poland or Senegal.


Telford & Wrekin Council leader Councillor Shaun Davies said: “We are completely behind England’s bid to land the ultimate prize in world football and I think it is a great idea to show our support by lighting up one of our landmark buildings in the colours of the George Cross.”
