Calling all Crane Enthusiasts

There is just over a week to go until the closure of the A442, allowing for one of Europe's largest cranes to be erected on the southbound carriageway on Wednesday, June 27.

Calling all Crane Enthusiasts

This shortened 3D model shows how the LG1750 crane will first be built and then used to lift a section of the new footbridge into place over the railway line. The full four minute video can be viewed here.

Weather conditions will play a huge role in the success of the lift so the project team will be keeping a close eye on the forecast and hope it’s not too windy on the night of the lift. The timings for the actual lifting of the bridge are currently planned for the early hours of Sunday, July 1. The whole process is planned to complete, with the road reopened on Tuesday, July 3 weather permitting. A diversions map can be found at http://www.telford.gov.uk/footbridge which shows the alternative routes to the town centre during the closure period. The advice for motorists is to use the diversions before they reach the town centre, particularly the Hollinswood Interchange and Greyhound roundabouts to avoid traffic building around peak times.

Businesses, including the Council's own employees, have been encouraged to stagger starting times or work from home where possible to help ease congestion.

Cabinet Member for Finance, Commercial Services & Economic Development Councillor Lee Carter said: "As we approach this exciting stage, the communities' support is very important; we ask for patience but also for help while the road closure is in effect. We urge everyone to check out the diversions map and plan their journeys via alternative routes, sharing lifts or using public transport if possible.

"We have to wait until closer to the time until we know exactly when the lift will take place and how the weather will affect it but we plan to reopen the roads on Tuesday, July 3."

During the closure period, the flow of vehicles will be monitored both on the ground and by traffic control officers. For updates listen to Radio Shropshire’s traffic reports or follow the Council's Twitter account @TelfordWrekin using the #TelfordFootbridge.

The next phase of the project due later this autumn, will involve a similar lift of the main walkway which is currently being assembled on site and planned. Similar road closures will be required for the crane's final visit when it will lift the largest and final section into place.
