Luminous signs from Keep Britain Tidy warning dog owners that “We are Watching You” will also be put up in the area.  At the end of the four weeks the dog mess will be cleared up.

The move follows an increasing number of complaints to the Council about the amount of dog poo around the school.

Councillor Richard Overton, Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for enforcement, said: “How anyone thinks it’s acceptable not to clear up after their dog is beyond me, particularly around a primary school. 

“Marking up dog poo with non-permanent paint has been very effective at reducing the number of incidents in other parts of the borough and so we hope it works in Sutton Hill.

“We want people to take pride in our communities and pick up after their pets.  There really is no excuse for not bagging and binning your dog’s mess, as there are more than 50 places across the borough that give away free dog-poo bags.”

Councillor Overton added: “Anyone not picking up after their pets runs the risk of being fined £50 and if you don’t pay, it could lead to a fine of up to £1,000 for a first offence.  Far simpler, and cheaper, to pick up after your pet.

“It really helps if people report incidents they see, as we recently issued four fines on the back of reports that came in from people who were prepared to provide a statement.”

If people spot anyone not cleaning up after their dog, they can report via the Council’s website www.telford.gov.uk/report or the Everyday Telford app.

The Sutton Hill dog poo spraying will carry on until 8 June, when the Council and volunteers will evaluate its effectiveness.
