Around 10.000 at Spring into St George’s Day, celebrating Telford 50
Around 10.000 people came to the first big event celebrating Telford 50: Spring into St. Georges, in Telford Town Park
Sunday’s St. George’s Day Event was about celebrating Telford’s past, present and future.
Activities from different decades were on offer in Town Park’s QEII Arena and Southwater Library, with a nostalgic nod to the popular Super Saturday event as camel racing returned in the park.
Knights, jousting, falconry and a dragon with stilt walkers added the St. George’s Day flavour to the event.
Children enjoyed special guests such as TV’s Mike the Knight and Evie and a range of traditional fairground activities (Ball in the Bucket, Helter Skelter Hoopla, Buzz Wire, High Striker and Fairground Organ) as well as archery, a climbing wall, RAF Cosford Stem bus and even a virtual reality F1 simulator.
A gallery of photos from the event is available here.
The event was supported by a team of over 30 volunteer GEMs (Golden Event Makers), who are supporting the exciting 50th anniversary programme.
Anyone who wishes to join this team and take part at other Telford 50 events throughout the year, can find more details and register at www.telford50.co.uk/GEM
Councillor Rae Evans, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, Tourism & Partnerships, said: “It was a memorable day, with lots of fun and exciting activities in the Town’s Park for everyone to enjoy.
The event helped to mark St. George’s Day in proper style and is kick starting the Telford 50 celebration events.
Lots more events celebrating Telford 50 will be taking place over the next months – the next big one is just 3 weeks away!
On 12 and 13 May, Telford Town Park will host the Telford Kite and Balloon Fiesta– which will see hot air balloons floating over the borough, opportunities to take to the sky in hot air balloon rides, subject to booking, as well as the return of the family friendly Kite Festival – more details can be found on www.telford50.co.uk/balloons “
