Let’s grow Telford’s technological talent

Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, Councillor Shirley Reynolds wants to see more schools and young people learning about new digital technologies and there’s now a great fun way that they can do this.

Let’s grow Telford’s technological talent

VEX Robotics demystifies digital technology subjects and really simplifies both the teaching and the understanding from children. They offer robot kits to all schools in Telford at a subsidised cost. These robotic packages allow children the opportunity to gain new skills in mechanics, programming, mathematics and engineering – which all sought after skills for later in life.

Three schools from Telford took part in the most recent VEX robotics project which saw them build and develop a unique peace of technology all while having fun and learning new skills such as problem solving, team building, leadership and project management.

Year 5 children from Grange Park Primary School made it to the VEX National Finals which were held at Telford International Centre on 1 March.  They were the youngest children to reach this stage of the competition where they competed against around 40 other schools from across the UK, with some children as old as 15.

Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, Councillor Shirley Reynolds said: “Well done to our three schools who took up the offer at the start of the school year and a huge congratulations to Grange Park Primary School for reaching the VEX National Finals. This is their first year involved with VEX Robotics and to get this far into the competition is a massive achievement.
“Technology isn’t going away and it is crucial that we equip future generations for their career years. VEX Robotics offer their robot kits to all schools and they offer real educational value as well as it being a really fun way to learn.”
