A special free event is being held on Monday 12 March at Telford’s Oakengates Theatre @ The Place to celebrate Commonwealth Day.

The event features a programme of music and performances to celebrate diversity within the community under the tagline “Towards A Common Future”.

The 6pm event will be attended by a representative of Shropshire’s Lord Lieutenant’s office and is open to the public.

It will be led by Rev Keith Osmund-Smith from Telford Christians Together and there will be readings from faith groups as well as performances from school bands and community groups.

The event will also be attended by Borough Mayor Councillor Stephen Reynolds, who will be holding a collection for the mayor’s charity appeal at the end of the event. The mayor is raising money for Severn Hospice (Telford).

Councillor Reynolds said: “We are very honoured to be hosting this special event to mark Commonwealth Day and I am delighted that our planned programme will have a truly international feel including local performers and school children.

“I am also very pleased that we will have the opportunity to raise more money for my charity appeal – Severn Hospice is a very worthy cause and I want to thank everyone who has given generously during my year as mayor.”

Commonwealth Day this year is being held ahead of a busy month for the Commonwealth during April, which includes the Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast, a Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting and the Queen’s 92nd birthday.
