Happy 49th birthday, Telford! One year to go to the Big 50!

Telford turns 49 years old tomorrow, 29.11 (marking the date of its designation as Telford New Town) and preparations for the Big 50th anniversary in 2018 are forging ahead!

Happy 49th birthday, Telford!
One year to go to the Big 50!

To celebrate Telford’s 50th birthday next year, we are organising and supporting a range of anniversary celebrations and events.

This will include festivals, carnivals, events and other festive activities that people can join in.

We want to help as many people as possible get involved in celebrating the 50th anniversary and as such, lots of activities, surveys, workshops and challenges have already taken place.

Here is a wrap-up of everything that is and has been going on preparing for Telford 50. Have a look and see what’s for you!

- Are YOU interested in knowing more about how to join in the main Telford 50 events?

Here are the main events taking place in the first half of 2018.
One of our biggest events is next summer, The Place in the Park – a unique entertainment experience at the QEII Fields In Trust Town Park Arena between 4-19 August, including comedy, music, dance and children’s shows.

But remember, there’s more to come!  We still have events to announce and community events will take place all through the year, so be sure to keep an eye on it.

- Could YOU volunteer to support Telford 50 events?

Our volunteers for Telford 50 will be called GEMs (Golden Event Makers) and as many as possible are required to make Telford 50 extra-special!

If you’re proud of the borough and its communities, want to have fun and help make a spectacular 50th anniversary programme happen with like-minded people – come and join the Golden Event Makers team! How much you decide to do is entirely up to you!

- Want to organise YOUR own Telford 50 events?

We’ve closed applications for Telford Pride @ 50 Celebration Grant  to help organise celebration events for next year.

But there’s still plenty of other grant sources you can apply for, to help fund your Telford 50 events.
www.telford50.co.uk provides useful information and several toolkits (logo, communication and events toolkits) to help anyone in the community involved in Telford 50 events.

- Do you want to leave YOUR own legacy for Telford 50?

Get your own words (on Telford’s past and present) carved into the new Southwater Square!
Until 4 Dec, we are inviting anyone feeling creative to put forward short statements and words that celebrate 50 years of Telford and its exciting future ahead. These then have a chance to be included into the paving in the new Southwater Square when it opens in 2018. Just email telford50@telford.gov.uk with your statements.

Earlier this year, we’ve asked people what type of legacy projects they think would best celebrate the Borough’s history and growth.
Heritage and Tourism came up as the most popular themes. Based on this, we are now developing a list of projects the Telford Pride @ 50 fund will support and will work in early 2018 with groups and organisations relevant to the chosen projects to bring these to life.

Council Leader Shaun Davies said: “With only four more weeks to the start of our anniversary year and one year until the actual anniversary date, we are really excited to see such great interest in Telford 50 from all over the borough.

“People are genuinely willing to get involved, either by volunteering to support the main Telford 50 events, by organising their own Telford 50 community event or simply by having their own say on what they would like to see as part of the celebrations”

“Telford’s 50th anniversary is, more than anything, a celebration of people from our borough and we want to support each and every one in their ideas and commitment. Here’s looking forward to 2018 being the best year ever for Telford and its people.”
