Almost 1,400 responses to Telford 50 consultation survey on legacy projects
The Council wants as many people as possible to be involved in preparations for Telford’s 50th anniversary in 2018.
From August to 18 September, hundreds of people have been completing a survey on the type of legacy projects they think would best celebrate the Borough’s history and growth.
The Council has put aside nearly £1 Million to support legacy schemes that the public wants to see as part of Telford 50. These include initiatives such as arts and cultural projects, community buildings, sports, leisure and recreation facilities, heritage trails and local attractions or digital enablement (such as websites and apps).
The survey received 1.381 responses, including those from a Facebook poll. The most popular themes as lasting legacy for Telford 50 were Heritage and Tourism.
People also came up with lots of ideas of their own for the anniversary, including recognising the contribution of Thomas Telford, heritage trails and sculptures.
Based on this public feedback, the Council will develop a list of projects to be supported by the Telford Pride @ 50 Fund. In early 2018 the Council will work with groups and organisations relevant to the chosen projects to bring these to life.
The survey also asked residents to register as volunteers for Telford 50 events and to express their interest in organising a community event.
So far, 239 people have registered to volunteer and the Council is in contact with them about how they can get involved.
Almost 100 people have also said they’re interested in organizing a community event. Applications are still open for funding (until Monday, 23 October 2017), for anyone wanting to organize an event on Telford 50 (more details on www.telford50.co.uk/funding).
Council Leader Shaun Davies said: “It is amazing to see such great interest already in Telford’s 50th anniversary from all over the borough.
“Our planning for next year will focus on what people want to see and how we can support them to plan their own celebration activities or events.
“We’ve had a great number of responses that will help us choose the projects that people want. It’s fantastic that we’ve already had so many people registering as volunteers for events and wanting to organise their own event on Telford 50.
