Telford turns 50 – more to come in preparation for the anniversary, watch out for it!

There is no secret that Telford turns 50 in 2018 and the preparations for the big anniversary are forging ahead!

Telford turns 50 – more to come in preparation for the anniversary, watch out for it!

Telford & Wrekin Council wants to get as many borough residents, visitors, groups and businesses as possible involved in setting the scene for next year’s anniversary.

Telford 50 has already generated lots of interest, with 5.000 people helping to choose an anniversary logo in an online poll, while hundreds more have been giving their ideas on what they’d like to see happen in 2018 in the borough.

For over a month, people have been completing an online survey to say what type of legacy projects they think would best celebrate the Borough’s history and growth. Copies of the survey are also available in libraries, community and leisure centres.

The survey runs until 18 September and the Council wants as many people as possible to take part, to help decide which projects should be developed.

In addition to this survey, there is even more to come in the next weeks about the plans for Telford 50.

If YOU have a great idea for a celebration for Telford’s 50th birthday but don’t quite have the budget, you can soon apply for funding to help make this happen. Funding will be available through the Council’s Pride in Our Community programme to help organise celebration events during Telford’s 50th Birthday.

If you’re a community/voluntary group, a neighbourhood group, faith group, charity, other not for profit organisation, Town or Parish Council, a school, a business or an individual -  the Telford Pride @ 50 Celebration Grant could be of interest to you.  You will be able to apply for up to £2,000 to contribute to the costs of your celebration.

Applications will open next week. If you want to receive more news on this topic, please register here. You can also join the conversation on Telford 50 online in our dedicated Facebook group.

Council Leader Shaun Davies said: “Telford’s 50th anniversary is, more than anything, a celebration of people from our borough. We want to encourage as many as possible to get involved and help us make 2018 a great year for our town and one to remember.

“My message to our residents is: Tell us what you want to see for the 50th anniversary and if you can volunteer to support the events. Think about your own way to celebrate with an event and how we could support you, for example with funding.”

The Council will also launch the Telford 50 website (www.telford50.co.uk) later this month.
