1,700 new LED lights installed in the Borough since April

This spring Telford & Wrekin Council has started to improve street lights as part of the Pride in Our Community investment programme.

1,700 new LED lights installed in the Borough since April

The Council will be investing £5.2m into street lighting over the next two years, which includes the upgrade of more than 20,000 street lights to LED.  Around 1,700 have now been upgraded.

The new LED lights use less energy, reduce pollution and make it easier for residents to see things at night, helping to make areas safer.

The upgrade to LED lights not only leads to improved lighting but also saves the Council £420,000 a year through reduced maintenance and lower energy costs.

Angela McClements, Cabinet Member for Transport, Infrastructure & Broadband, said: “We want the streets of our borough to be better lit and safer. The new lights will also be more cost-effective for us to run.

“Since the programme started this spring, we have upgraded the lights in areas such as Sutton Hill, St Georges, Priorslee and Halesfield industrial estate.

“On average, the Council’s team has upgraded around 100 street lights a week.”

The next phase of works will be moving to new areas such as Woodside, Madeley, Wrockwardine Wood & Trench and Donnington & Muxton.
