A warning has been issued by Telford & Wrekin Council about unlicensed scrap metal dealers.
Their offer to take anything away at a bargain price or for free is too good to be true and could land you in trouble.
Legitimate scrap dealers who are licensed are required by law to keep a record of your details and of the scrap they take away on your behalf. They must also record the date the scrap was collected and where it was collected from.
Councillor Richard Overton, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet member for enforcement said: “Scrap metal dealers in Telford and Wrekin have to be licensed by this Council. Look out for the council’s red and white badge in the windscreen of their van.
“If you use a dodgy dealer who can’t show you the badge, your scrap may end up being fly-tipped. If the contents of a fly-tip are traced back to you, you could be fined or taken to court.
“We would urge residents who see an unlicensed Scrap Metal Collector operating in their area to contact us by telephoning 01952 381818.
“If scrap is stolen from your drive then this should be reported to West Mercia Police on 101 or 999 if you see it happening.
“The Council can take away bulky items such as fridges, cookers, TVs and bikes that won’t fit into the grey wheelie bin. And you can be sure they won’t end up in a field or on the side of a road.”
