Reminder to candidates on election material on Council land

Telford & Wrekin Council is reminding candidates standing in next month’s General Election, and their campaigners, that posters and other election material cannot be put up on Council-owned land or equipment.

The Council has banned political groups and candidates from using Council-owned land or equipment to put up posters supporting their campaigns in Telford and Wrekin.

Many other councils in the region also do not allow such political election material on their land and the issue came to the fore in 2014’s summer’s European elections in the borough, when a number of election posters on street furniture were damaged or de-faced, often with offensive symbols or language.

If anyone sees any election material that has been placed on Council land or property, they should email elections@telford.gov.uk with details of the location, or call 01952 383206.

Telford & Wrekin Council’s returning officer, Richard Partington said: “I would remind campaign groups for the General Election that the ban on the posting of campaign literature on Council-owned land and equipment applies for this poll, as much as any other.

“Any group posting material on council land or property will be charged for its removal.”
