Council waives burial cost for young people
Telford & Wrekin Council is to waive burial costs for children from the borough who pass away.
The cost of the burial and plot – equivalent to £1,740 – were already free. The council has now decided to waive further costs of around £200 meaning there will be no cost to bereaved families of burying their loved ones.
Council leader Shaun Davies said: “We feel this is the right thing to do. Losing a child is an unimaginable horror for any parent. This grief can be greatly amplified by the stress of not being able to pay for a burial or proper funeral.
“Local authorities sometimes have it within their gift to show some compassion and that is absolutely correct in this instance to offer further help to bereaved families at a very difficult time.”
