Nominations open for Great British High Street Competition

The Great British High Street Competition is open and looking for nominations from England, Scotland and Wales’ best high streets.

Nominations open for Great British High Street Competition

Telford & Wrekin Council is proud to support this year’s competition and want to encourage high streets in the borough to apply and highlight the wonderful work that is going on locally.

Earlier in the year Telford & Wrekin Council announced funding for 21 projects to help boost business and attract more people to the high streets across nine key areas of the borough.

This included schemes that would benefit all of the nine high street areas, delivering training and support for retailers to help improve and enhance their business and the overall look and appeal of their high street.

The Pride In Your High Streets scheme was set up to enable these areas to develop their own ideas to revitalise high streets and help businesses grow.

The Great British High Street Competition presents an excellent opportunity to follow on from the Pride In Your High Streets projects and allow local businesses and high streets to celebrate their success on a local and national scale.

This year there are nine categories for high streets to enter, many of which are suitable for Telford and Wrekin borough high streets.  There are also four individual categories to recognise the excellent work of someone who has progressed their business in the local area.

Winners will get the chance to receive a cash prize of up to £10,000 and a range of mentoring and training opportunities, including digital training from Google.

Councillor Gilly Reynolds, cabinet member for Education, Employment and Regeneration, said: “We want our high streets to flourish and be the hubs of activity locally for residents.

“A lot of work has taken place in recent years to regenerate our local centres and the Pride In Your High Street fund has further enhanced those improvements.

“It’s now a great time to celebrate all the good work that is taking place in the borough by business owners and the community to improve our high streets and the Great British High Street Competition is an excellent way to do it.

“So why not chat to your business neighbours, local parish or town council, councillors and community and get together to nominate high streets in Telford & Wrekin that you think deserve to be recognised.”

Applications for the Great British High Street Competition close on Friday 9 September.
